Day 1 (6/9/01)
Pictures show us packing, to arrival in Anchorage, and a bus trip to the boat. Along the way, the bus stopped at a wilderness "halfway house" of sorts. The animals shown are being prepared for rehabitation in the wild. The boat is the Sea Princess, currently one of 4 ships that are the second largest in the fleet.
Day 2 (6/10/01)
We're on the move! We wave to the Hyundai cargo ship crew as we pull out of Seward. As we left the Seward area, and entered College Fjord we saw some pretty neat scenery, including our first chunks of ice. We awoke to this actually. The water looked like glass..the picture doesn't quite do it justice. Also, the last few pics are attempts at catching sea otters in action. If you squint, you'll see 'em. The ripples in the water are usually indicators of sea otter presense. I need a longer zoom.
Day 3 (6/11/01)
We've come back out of College Fjord and we're headed to Skagway. First, however, was a trip through Glacier Bay. This part of the trip was easily the most scenic, as I hope you'll see. As we headed through the mouth of the bay, we encountered a few humpback whales. From picture 15 through 34, we're attempting to take whale pics. Some are good, some aren't. Squint harder.
After the whale pics, we saw our first glaciers. 46 and 47 show Reid Glacier. 49 through 56 show Lamplugh Glacier. 58 through 63 are attempts at seeing harbor seals. They're out there on the ice floes, but I can't pick 'em out now. Maybe you can! You'll notice that the water takes on a greenish tinge sometimes, that's what it looks like. It's from silt runoff from the glaciers.
Bears! 75-85 are pictures of brown bears. On the right side of the beach area near the rocks. They're there. You may have to blow up the picture.
The last group of pics show Margerie Glacier, the highlight of the show. 98 shows "calving", where pieces of ice fall off the glacier. Makes a huge crashing sound that starts with a loud *CRACK* that echoes everywhere. Very impressive.
Day 4 (6/12/01)
We've docked in Skagway. The first set of pics show us on our helicopter expedition to 2 glaciers. We got champagne and fudge.
Starting at 66 is our glacier safari that got us out on canoes. Enjoy the close up look at a freshwater glacier.
The last set of pics shows some sea lions on the rocks and a visit from another humpback which, I guess I sorta missed..
Day 5 (6/13/01)
We're in Juneau now, and our first trip was a wildlife expedition on a catamaran. Enjoy the awesome pictures of orca. Around 40 of 'em were right in the area just as we left the dock. The last pics show some sea lions on a buoy and another humpback! I got him pretty good that time.
We then took another helicopter up to the huge Mendenhall Glacier. Neat shots of the blue ice and 72 shows Alex grabbing a drink. 77 shows some Dahl Sheep (mountain goats).
Day 6 (6/14/01)
In Ketchikan now. Only one expedition today (thank goodness). First a little canoe trip on a beautiful mountain lake and then some off roading in a Jeep! We saw a black bear on the bus ride up there, but it ran away, so no pic.
Day 7 (6/15/01)
This was a travel day and we took it easy. All we saw was this odd house being pulled along by a boat.
Day 8 (6/16/01)
After a long boat ride, and some nighttime shots, and pictures of our stateroom, we arrive in Vancouver! We spent the first day in Stanley Park. We went to the Acquarium and caught the beluga whale show and the rest are a bunch of pictures of local flora and fauna. The black squirrels in 85-88 were HUGE and very unafraid of humans. Neat turtle on 93. Baby swans (cygnets) in 96-101. Great Blue Heron in 109-110.
Day 9 (6/17/01)
Our final day. We spent it on Granville Island, which isn't really an island, but it is a shopping area with a huge farmer's market. We took pictures crossing the bridge to get there, passing the Molsen brewery and taking a tour at the Granville Island brewery.
