Garden Party

Last weekend I put pavers around my planters. This is a project I’ve been meaning to do for at least a year, but I finally got around to it.

In addition to the aesthetic aspect of the project, I was tired of the guy who mows my lawn also mowing my flowers and shrubs. I’m hoping that it will keep the Bermuda grass from taking over where it shouldn’t be.

The key is to do as much work as possible before it gets too hot. Saturday morning I got up at 6 and dug the trenches. It took about 3 hours, and was the most physically demanding part of the project.

Then after I got cleaned up, we headed to Home Depot and got the pavers, landscaping fabric, top soil and pine bark nuggets. It took two trips to get it all home. Alex was very excited to be hauling stuff in his truck.

Sunday morning I got up early again and started laying the pavers. I put down strips of the landscaping fabric under the bricks. I’m hoping this will deter the weed and grass growth between the pavers. Then once the pavers were all placed, I used the top soil to fill in around them. Then I sprayed some Round up on the Bermuda that was in the garden area and covered everything with mulch. The Bermuda was so bad around the laurel near the garage, that I put a layer of landscaping cloth over the whole plot around the shrub.

Then Alex came and helped me pick up the sod (I thought about transplanting it, but I didn’t have anywhere I needed it.) and put everything away. Sunday’s work, including clean up took about 5 hours.

In total I used 56 pavers, 3 bags of top soil and 12 bags of pine bark, and approximately 8 hours of my labor and 1 hour of Alex’s.

Sounds like unfair division of labor to me.

[...] We also changed our landscaping company, and I’m very pleased with this new company too. The last guy was cheap, but our lawn looked terrible after he mowed and he kept mowing my flowers until I put down the brick edging. [...]
