Train Table Tales

May 8th, 2007 · by sarra · 1 Comment

We had a Toys R Us coupon that expired last Saturday (4/21). Not wanting to waste the opportunity to save $5 (we’re frugal that way), we headed there before nap time.

I figured we’d get some legos for an additional birthday present for Link, but Alex suggested we get some more track. We had previously designed a fancy track layout, but felt we could do better. After some deliberation we decided to get a track expansion set rather than the switcher expansion set.

After Link went down for his nap, we worked on laying out the new track set up. After a while I got too tired to work on it and had to go sit down for a while. Alex did a great layout, but one of the interior loops didn’t link to the outer loop (there was no way to get there). By then, I’d rested and he was pooped. I found a way to switch some connections and link the whole thing up. We took some pictures and put it all away.

New Set-up

That afternoon we went to the hardware store to get the materials for the table. They didn’t have a big enough piece, so I ended up at the Home Despot after Link went to bed. I got them to cut it for me and I sanded it and brought it inside.

The next day we set up the track, and it seemed that the wood was too small! Then we consulted the pictures and realized it was a false alarm. While the track was up, we decided how to paint the background. When I took the track down that time, I numbered the pieces so we wouldn’t get mixed up again.

The Base The set up

Sunday after nap we went to Michael’s and got some paint and felt (for the bottom). I spent Sunday afternoon painting. Then I didn’t do anything else all week.

Painting - water features Painting - blacktop Painting - logging road painting - grass and trees painting - parking spots painting - waves in the water

Friday night I cut and glued the trim for the edges. Saturday during naptime, Alex and I glued the felt down on the bottom. Saturday night we laid out the track, and carefully glued it down. Sunday morning we presented the new train table and Link had a blast playing with it.

Finished product

What a wonderful birthday present!
