Inappropriate Reading Material

January 19th, 2008 · by sarra · 1 Comment

I bought The Gashlycrumb Tinies for Alex years and years ago, when we were still courting. It’s an illustrated alphabet book chronicling the demise of 26 children, from Amy who fell down the stairs, to Zillah who drank too much gin. It’s been perched on the back of the commode in our various apartments and now in the house.

Since we’ve been potty training, we’ve spent lots of time in the bathroom. Link took an interest in the book, and I’d always managed to avoid reading it to him until the other day. Surprisingly, he liked it. (I assume it went over his head.) After I read it the first time, he asked for it again. Later that night, I went to hide the book and couldn’t find it. Well, Link found it on Friday and made me read it to him again.

It’s been moved to a high shelf in the library. I just hope he doesn’t become a serial killer.

I think he will fare well… after all generations of children grew up relatively unscathed reading the original and unedited Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
