Day One - Madrid
The Starting Place: The Exact Center of Spain
Ok, well maybe not the center of Spain, but certainly the very beginning
of the Spanish road system, presumably based
on the roadwork done by the Romans way back
when. It's located in the Plaza del Sol.
Those are our feet.
A view of the Opera from Sol
This picture was Alex's idea. It didn't come out too well. Whatever. At least there's a McDonalds in the picture.
The Plaza Mayor in Madrid
Yep. Tourist Central, but it's still pretty cool. That dude
in the middle on the horse is King Felipe III for whom the Plaza was
completed for. They used to hold bullfights
here. It's pretty much where all celebrations and parades begin and
end in
Madrid.
Sarra and Alex in the Plaza Mayor (the other side)
Note the painted facade behind those good looking folks (not the balding fat guy).
More Plaza Mayor
More of that painted facade along with a horse's ass.
El Cuchi (Carlos 'n' Charlie's)
A tourist restaurant in the Plaza Mayor, with a bunch of tourists out
front.
We ate there out of desperation one night
later in the week. The sign under the word Restaurante says "Hemingway
never ate here..." Now we know
why.
City Hall
Pretty old building. The mayor has an office here. There's
really not much to tell. It looked nice so we took a picture.
Sue us.
The Cathedral
It's been under construction for 100 years, and it's not done yet.
Jumpers' Bridge
Ok, that's not what it's called, but it's where we were standing.
Near the cathedral is a bridge that has big plexiglas walls
on either side. It's to deter jumping,
which I understand, has taken a few lives. As you can see from the
pic, it's a pretty
long way down. There was a story that
Angel related, but I've long since forgotten it. Sorry.
